Thanks to all of you, worldwide, for listening to the Brother Russell Podcast in 2007. Especially those of you in China! (WTF??)

I know there are about 70 of you who subscribe to the feed, and listen to each new show faithfully. I have a lot of cool ideas for upcoming shows, but there are a few technical upgrades that I need to make before I can really do it right. And for all my Jewish and Muslim friends (or vegetarians for that matter), I offer a delicious honeybaked ham (figuratively speaking). Money is the Reason for the Season, so be sure and buy some stuff. We must all do our part to help the wealthiest 1% of Americans to amass the billions of dollars they need to pay for the construction of space stations and lunar colonies, to which they will surely escape after they have polluted the last drop of drinkable water and fouled the last cubic foot of breathable air.

In the meantime, here’s a weird ”reality audio” scramble from my cassette collection and other sources. Features a great prank call from the Pittsburgh Fightsters to a semi-famous record producer, the enraged answering messages left by a disgruntled New Orleans musician for an incompetent sound technician, and Brian Wilson standing up to his abusive dad Murry in the recording studio during the recording session for “Help Me Ronda”.

Melba’s on-air healing from depression and grieving is the centerpiece of this slightly abbreviated edition of the podcast. (Last time, we heard a call in which she was bummed out about all the death and disease that is going around, so this seemed to be a fitting follow-up.. it has never been released on CD). We also hear a lovely example of “Sacred Harp” music (or shape-note singing) from the deep woods of Alabama, a terminally ill Colonel Harland Sanders muddling his way through his last Kentucky Fried Chicken commercial, a cautionary tune about divine wrath, a snippet of a preaching radio show that probably lasted no more than two or three weeks, and as a reward for those who are still paying attention at the end.. a mind-blowing promotional spot for a movie that “will make you come alive when you step out on the streets”.

Ascent of the Pseudo-Melba? Or weird coincidence?

For everyone who has been asking, the person who was featured on Ellen DeGeneres recently doing the voice of an “88 year old lady from Austin TX” named Gladys Hardy who “loves Jesus but drinks too much now and then” is not me. It’s apparently some stand-up comic guy in Austin. I will keep his name under my hat, but he has apparently been doing his own old lady schtick even longer than I have. The influence of the great Jonathan Winters lives on. I suspect that Gladys Hardy and Melba Jackson are both partly inspired by Winters’ twisted character Maude Frickert. I think Gladys Hardy is largely inspired by the Austin comedian’s grandmother, whereas Melba is inspired by 20% my own grandmother and a bigger percentage of this crazy old battleaxe that lived next door to us in Garland, where I grew up. One of those old ladies who is so disagreeable and prone to rants that even her own children have nothing to do with her any more.
